The trees in some of the following photos were planted by seed during
the beginnings of the 1890's. Monkeypod trees will not interfere with
each other in the root system or branching system. Since they were
planted only about 20 feet apart, the roots and branches of one went
only east and the other only west, creating 2 very unbalanced trees.

In March of 2004 the North Kohala district of the Big Island of Hawaii
received a record rainfall. The supersaturated ground allowed the two
trees to rip out of the ground and fall apart. The resulting mess took one
logging crew and two professional tree trimming crews 2 days to clear
the roads so local residents could pass. Blackhat Logging and Pacific
Basin Mills bought the trees and are giving them new life as beautiful
objects and lumber. We have had a custom chainsaw bar built that we
believe is the longest in the world (15') and will be cutting the largest
single piece table slabs ever cut.

The dismantling of these trees has been
the most challenging project our two
companies have ever undertaken.

Some of the beautiful slabs to be made
into counter tops, bar tops, and tables,
we have cut so far (92 as of March 2008).
We also cut over 5,000 board feet of
dimensional lumber from the branches.
The largest slabs from the branches were
5' wide x 17' long X 3" thick.
